Founded in 2001, Richard Mille is a Swiss luxury watch brand known for manufacturing incredibly high-end, technical timepieces. The brand’s tagline is “a racing machine on the wrist,” which fits well into the context of the 100th-anniversary celebrations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, France’s prestigious endurance race. At the recent biennial Le Mans Classic vintage racing event hosted by the Circuit de la Sarthe, Richard Mille unveiled the RM 72-01 Le Mans Classic limited edition watch.
The RM 72-01 Flyback Chronograph Watch Limited Edition
Richard Mille produced a dedicated Le Mans Classic edition watch for the first time in 2008, and this year’s version is an iteration of the RM 72-01 Flyback Chronograph, featuring a white and green Quartz TPT case and a matching rubber strap. The tonneau case is 38.4mm x 11.68mm x 47.34mm, with a mechanically similar movement to the other existing 72-01 models, featuring the brand’s first flyback chronograph movement, the CRMC-1, which is automatic and has a 24-hour chronograph, big date display, and function indicator.
The titanium dial also shows the Le Mans Classic nameplate and references to the race’s history, such as the “16” red color to commemorate the race’s 4 PM start time. Only 150 units of this exquisite and expensive timepiece will be made, and the wristwatch will cost you a whopping $335,000.
Richard Mille Meets Vintage Racing
Richard Mille has had a history of making watches that are customizable for unique occasions and events. The RM 72-01 LMC watch was designed to celebrate Richard Mille’s association with the Le Mans Classic event held on Circuit de la Sarthe. Although the event wasn’t as popular when it started in 2002, it has expanded over time, becoming more of a festival for the niche vintage racing community with more than 800 vintage racing vehicles taking to the track over the weekend.
Expensive, subtle or not, the audience for the RM 72-01 Le Mans Classic watch is undoubtedly for those who are passionate about vintage racing and can afford to be custodians for vintage race cars. Though the wristwatch isn’t cheap, this limited-edition timepiece by Richard Mille is an extraordinary piece of engineering and design that encapsulates the essence of Richard Mille’s appeal.
Richard Mille has done what the brand does best: creating limited edition timepieces that are both technically advanced and eye-catching. The RM 72-01 Le Mans Classic may be an expensive, limited edition timepiece that not everyone can afford. It does, however, bring excitement to the vintage racing community, and it’s a testament to the brand’s expertise in blending style and substance in a wristwatch.
